Changing a Car Fan Belt

The name fan belt is bit frustrating because the belt drives not just a fan. It is usually called an accessory belt, it goes around a pulley that is attached to the flywheel and powers other car components and motors such as the water pump, alternator, power brakes, air conditioner compressor, and the power steering pump. You can usually found this belt under the hood, around the engine. In other car models they use more than one fan belt to divide the work. Changing or replacing your car fan belt can save money and time. Here are some simple steps on how to change fan belt.

  1. First you have to know what kind of belt your car use. Its better to consult your car owner's manual for that one. You can also see there an illustrated instructions on how to change fan belt, since not all cars have the same fan belt. Or you can take off the old belt and bring it to an auto parts store to find a replacement.

  2. Open the hood and locate the fan belt, it is usually on the plastic cover above the cooling fan. Make a quick inspection, if the belt worn or have cracks then will need to replace it. Just take off the old belt, you have to use wrench release the tension on the belt. Use the wrench to loosen the tensioner bolt. Your car hood usually have the diagram that you can easily to locate and describe the path of the belt on your particular car.

  3. You can now install the new belt, just slide the new belt through the pulleys the same way remove the old belt. Loose the the tension more to easily install the new belt. Refer on the diagram in your car or you car manual to check your work. Now tighten the tension bolt using the wrench, be careful not to get it too tight. A belt that is too tight will put too much stress which can damage some of the components in your car. Start the car to test it, if you hear the belt make a squeaking sound you may need to tighten it more.
